Quick Guide Accredited Rotor Blade Testing

Modern approval practices for rotor blades comprise the evaluation of load-related, design-specific, material-induced, and production method-related safety factors. To date, in order to validate the assumptions, material tests to determine the design parameters and a complete blade test as per IEC 61400-23:2014 are mandatory.


Following the establishment of a modern infrastructure with unique testing methods, which, amongst other things, enable highly accurate deformation measurements and calibration procedures, the material testing activities were accredited according to ISO 17025 in March 2016. In February 2017, the rotor blade department was also subjected to the accreditation audit for “full-scale structural testing” (IEC 61400-23:2014). As a result, the certificate of DakkS, the german national accredition body, was handed over as official confirmation of technical expertise.


Material testing and full-scale blade testing audited

As a result, the certificate of DakkS, the german national accredition body, was handed over as official confirmation of technical expertise. Successful accreditation of full-scale structural testing represents an important milestone for the ongoing development of rotor blade testing activities at Fraunhofer IWES. It means that customers will be able to make even more effective use of our experience, gained from more than 20 full-scale blade tests. At the same time, it is ensured that the processes and testing procedures will be continuously improved.
