Coast 2.0

Optimization of the costs and risks of weather-dependent offshore and T&I activities

Funding: Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK)
Partners: E.ON Climate & Renewables GmbH, Global Renewables Shipbrokers GmbH, Seaway Offshore Cables GmbH
Duration: 07/2018 – 06/2022

Increasing competitive pressure results in new challenges for the effectiveness and efficiency of the offshore wind industry. For this reason, Fraunhofer IWES is developing COAST 2.0, a software solution for optimizing the costs and risks of weather-dependent offshore transport and installation (T&I) activities.

In response to the fact that harsh weather conditions are a fundamental risk when planning offshore projects, Fraunhofer IWES developed and launched the COAST tool. In recent years, this software has established itself for industrial and research applications and is focused on the analysis of the weather risks associated with T&I concepts in the early project phase.

COAST 2.0 extents the weather-risk analysis and considers further project risks. It is planned to develop and enhance the COAST tool for controlling project progress and development.

COAST 2.0’s aims include the improved analysis of weather risks considering critical paths. The development of automated scenario and performance analyses is planned. These methods will be incorporated in a software demonstrator, which is to be completed and tested over the three-year duration of this project in cooperation with the project partners.

Fraunhofer IWES coordinates the Coast 2.0 project and is responsible for the further development of methods and the COAST software demonstrator.
