The challenge
Significantly increased expansion targets for wind energy are leading to more public participation and permitting processes. For the climatic conditions in Germany, there is currently a lack of reliable, consistent analyses of the effects of wind farms in terms of
- temperature, humidity, precipitation,
- wind resources at higher altitudes,
- effects of technical concepts (low-induction rotors, direction of rotation).
The solution
The Facts4Wind research project combines measurement campaigns, high-resolution large eddy simulations (LES), and long-term mesoscale modeling to systematically investigate and clearly present environmental impacts and wind resources.
The added value
Facts4Wind compiles reliable, Germany-specific data on the environmental and resource impacts of wind farms, which can help objectify and accelerate permitting and public participation processes. For policymakers and public administration, the project aims to establish a foundation for evidence-based decisions regarding environmentally sustainable site designation and expansion planning. Additionally, it seeks to provide greater planning and investment certainty for the business sector, for example through realistic assessments of technical concepts such as low-induction rotors. The findings will be presented in a way that is easily understandable to the general public and are expected to lead to greater acceptance of wind energy in Germany.
